51th session

The fifty-first session of the Commission on the Status of Women took place from 26 February to 9 March 2007. In accordance with its multi-year programme of work for 2007-2009, the Commission considered “The elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against the girl child” as its priority theme


Representatives from Central Asia were: president of Forum of women’s NGOs of Kyrgyzstan, Nurgul Djanaeva, head of Feminist League of  Kazakhstan, Evgenia Kozyreva, president of Women Support Center, Roza Aitmatova and executive director of  FWNGOs, Bermet Stakeeva, participated in the session organized by Asian-Pacific Women Watch on the issue of  “Violence against women”.

Nurgul Djanaeva gave a talk on main issues in the area of violence against girls in transitional countries. It was underlined in the report that the number of crimes against girls in increasing, which is being reported by crisis centers and mass media. Unfortunately, that data of  law enforcement agencies and National Statistics Committee do not give a full picture in the area of violence against girls, but rather gender unspecified data. 8% of all crimes are committed against children.

The report was of much interested to the participants of the session. Information on the 51 session was published in the informational bulletin “Joogazyn”.
